Volt light

Volt light
This is the situation that ive got,
1997 Monte Carlo Z34, 3.4DOHC.
Plain and simple, If the volt light dosnt burn when the ignition is turned on the engine will crank but not start and run.
However if the light does burn, it will crank and run fine. This is a intermitent problem.
I have found that i have no fuel at the rail if the light isnt on but i do have fire at the plugs.
Ive checked the VATS system and all is well..
I bought the car for $500 and think it may be something simple and over looked.
Any thoughts will be welcome.
