Go for the turbos (twin) for REAL power! If you can get 900hp from a 3.8 on turbos, then 1,000+ should be a piece of cake!
900hp is refering to ZZPerformance's 9.01 sec GP. Something you can drive to church on Sundays, yeah, that's it!

The cartuning turbo is the only one out there specificlly designed for the LS4 engine everything else would have to be a custom job and might not be as reliable.
The cartuning runs at $5400 add another $1000-$1500 for the install, and you will need a new Tranny so another $3000-$4000 for a built one. about $10 000 lateryou will have 500whp.
a lot hp gain but it does cost a lot.
So far there is only on turbo LS4 it is a GP GXP with the prototype turbo. He runs low 12 with major traction issues.

No way, the trans will be the weak link by far. Ina full weight street car, I'd be amazed if it could make a full pass on the strip.

Well this is all a little disheartening. It seems Chevy has long forgotten the days when they built cars that could be "built" in your garage one weekend and then smoking Mustangs the next. I will most likely persue a set of dual turbos butthey will have to wait until the warrenty is gone and I win the lotto......twice. So for now I suppose I will focus on intake, exhuast, programing and suspension. Basically everything except the engine and tranny. I want to say thanks for all the info in this thread though. When time comes, I'll have to look this company up and drop some cash. What ever it takes to whope a Mustangs A**.

How do you figure? I've got a 99 GP GTP (same powertrain and carbasically as a supercharged 04 monte SS), and with about $600 in very basic mods (most used- 1.9 rockers, pulley, plog, etc) the thing runs high13s all day long.

I can smoke any stock mustang except an 03-04 cobra or an 05+ GT/ GT500. Even modded sn95s and foxes don't really scare me in it.

The big thing that sucks about the 5.3 is the fact that its NA. For cheap and easy modability the s/c 3800 would've been an easier choice since boosted engines usually respond to mods much better. To make big power NA, you need heads/cam- ask any NA LSx racer, and that is extremely difficult to do on a fwd car and is also very expensive.

Well let me be clear. I'm not saying there aren't things that can't be done to make substantial improvements in a short amount of time. I just miss the days where you could rip out the old 350, 327, or maybe 454, tear it down, plop it in the back of the pick-up, drop it off at the machine shop, pick it up, put it back together and plop it back in. All said and done $10,000 and you have a super car that a 13 year old boy could build. Now You have to do all of that, plus check to see what this is going to do to the computer. Reprogram the computer while it's on the dyno, try and squeeze it all back into an ever shrinking engine bay and $25,000 later you have a super car......that is still front wheel drive, corners like a brick and to ad insult to injury the ricers can do it all for half the price. I just miss the old days. I think instead of buying the new Camaro I'm going to look for a 68.

LoneSarSS,
GM has to stay competitive with other car makers. Imagine everyone else offering their latest and greatest computer packed cars and GM still offering only carbureted big blocks. They'd be out of business.
If you want a bad *** street rod get a 4th gen monte drop a 572 big block in it. Then go take on the stangs and Paul Walker fans.
All your fillings will be loose from the sound of that big block but who cares.

The point I was trying to make is if you get the right platform, you can have the speed to beat the muscle cars without ever pulling your engine. I've seen L67 cars with an IC and a cam in the 12s- thats good enough to beat most muscle cars, and about 90% of what you could run into on the street.

If fwd isn't your thing, try looking into an fbody or a goat or something along those lines. You can still go crazy fast without spending $10k for a built motor at a machine shop. The stock bottom end on the LSx engines is excellent as is.

I think a lot of the old carb/dist guys just haven't been immersed enough in the computer controlled stuff to see the new potential. There is so much more you can do and change to fine tune your car with a computer. I bet if you spent a couple days with a tuning company or a fuel injection / DIS drag team you could much better appreciate all there is to do.

Its no longer something that has to be done on a dyno by a pro either. You can pick up HPTuners for $500 or less used, and do a street tune to get about 90% dialed in; and that is good enough for all but the most crazy setups. The L67 crowd has cars in the low 9s running stock coils and just a retuned stock pcm- it really is amazing what can be done once you get into it.
