Default Transmission coming out.

Hello all. I have a 96 Monte that has been putting out the P1870 trans component slipping code for a short while now. Due to fixing the little things that need fixing to drive it now I have come to a point to start on this problem. I have a few new fluid leaks that have started but my main concern is the fuid being burnt. It is still full but almost solid black. As far as driving it goes, it has a slight shudder at lower speeds that comes and goes. I am a technician by trade but dumb in the transmission end. I have always been told by the older techs that if a car has high mileage and never had a trans service done, then dont do one. all the new detergents in the new fluid will eat the clutches up and it will come out quicker. I have a 97 donor car that has a bad motor but the trans is still there. What would be a decent price on a used trans and what years would work in mine? I dunno whether to trust the one out of the donor car or not. If a used one isnt too much it would make more sense to me than to try one of those. I dunno. I need some advice...lol. Thanx all.

first off, what motor and trans in the 96 and the same with the 97, then go from there in most cases. once you know that then i'm sure someone here will be able to help with what is the best swap for you?

edit: i see that your sig has 96z34.

Your 96 will have the 4t60e trans, but if your 97 donor is a z34 then it will have the 4t65e. You will need to find a 95-96 monte z34 because I think the gear ratios were specific to z34s. Im not sure if a 4t60e out of a non z34 monte will work cause the ratios may be different. Dont quote me on that tho.

Mine has the 3.4V6 and as far as transmissions, I guess the reply on here tells what trans. I kinda figured they were different from 96 to 97. I added some lucas trans additive to mine the other day but havent had a chance to drive it enough to see a difference. If I can get a few more months out of mine then it'll be ok. By then I'll be back to work and I'll get another one and put in. If and a big IF it lasts that long.

I had thought about making my own fenderwell intake system but I havent seen any of the pics of how its set up in the fenderwell as far as a filter or anything. Any help is appreciated.

I made it myself. I have a write up in the how to section. Check it out.
