Power Steering pump removal
Someone please help. I can't get the power steering pump out of my 2001 Monte Carlo SS. I have it disconnected but it seems like there is no extra room to take the pump out with out taking the pulley off before i remove it from the car. But I can't get down in there to use the pulley puller. I've tried taking off the front passenger side wheel no help. I tried taking off the alternator for more room still no help. Any advice on this would help. Thank you

Rolling the motor forward would of help because I only needed a 1/2" or 1". But I did get it out, I had to take off the ECM, Radiator reservoir, alternator, and the battery just to give me enough room to get my big hands down in the engine bay. I had to take the pulley off before i removed it from the engine bay but after I disconnected everything from it. I had to do the same thing to the new pump I put it down in the bay and then I installed the pulley, mounted it, and reconnected the lines. The car is running great now, no more loud whining noise for me. The job was not that hard. It only took a couple of hours and a few small cuts on my knuckles.

The power steering pumps suck on there cars. I bought this car with 6,000 miles on it and it now has 76,0000 miles on it. This is the 5th power steering pump I have had replaced on it, (the first that wasn't covered by the warranty and I had to do my self). I have also changed my power steering pressured line 7 times on this car, it seems like when it is really cold out side it can't take it and it blows(it just can't take these Chicago winters). I guess if I bring this car back to Cali I won't have there problems.

when you get it changed, flush the system with clean p/s fluid, and put in a p/s filter, I believe the part # is psf1 from ARC, just splices into the return line with a couple of clamps and stops the grit that ruins the pumps and rack seals, doesn't take up much room either, use the fluid GM recommends, don't use ATF

If you are low on P/S fluid, then it might be the cause of the whine...
But if your not low, adding fluid is not neccesary, and could be a bad thing if you add to much.
I would say its probably the p/s pump. Mine went bad in my Monte at around 70K
