When I went to unbolt the engine from the transmission, two bell housing bolts weren't even hand tight and one was missing. That would probably be why it cracked in the first place.

Anyway, my dad and I worked at it for a little while and the remains finally came off. Tapping it with a hammer (not slamming it) and a prybar with some WD-40 and it slid off. I'm surprised that the plate didn't fly apart in that condition.

GM back then had a problem with the flex plates cracking.
I would say that the trans bolts are a result after the flex plate breaking causing a vibration.

This wasn't the stock 31 year old flexplate though. This was a 3 1/2-year old plate with almost 50,000 miles on it. I think the flexplate cracked because the bell housing bolts weren't tight.
