Default P0440 -- where is the EVAP purge solenoid?

I just borrowed a 1999 Monte Carlo last Sunday, and now it's throwing a P0440.

I already found some instructions here on what to check, but since I'm completely new to this car. I have no idea where most of these things are located. The engine is 3800 Series II, and looks to me work on it can be a pain.

TIA

With a P0440 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
  • Remove and reinstall the gas cap, clear the code, and drive for a day and see if the codes come back.
  • Inspect the EVAP system for cuts/holes in tubes/hoses
  • Inspect for damaged or disconnected hoses around the Evap purge solenoid
  • Check and/or replace the sensor
  • Check and/or replace the purge valve
  • Have a professional use a smoke machine to detect leaks

Good luck finding the leak with all honesty! U and the million other Chevy owners out there, for years I had that code come on and off and after many smoke test and tracing games I finally found out my leak was inside my brake booster A smoke test wouldn't revile it cuz it's in an inclosed air tight compartment!
