I started this new thread because the problem has been identified. Now we need a solution. For many of us, taking our car to the dealer for service is not an option. With the work that I have done to The Beast I would be laughed out of the dealership if I asked them to do this kind of work. Either that or they would welcome me with the down payment of an arm and a leg. I am a large fan of my limbs and I don't mind getting my hands dirty. What exactly needs fixed with the DOD? I understand that the AFM shield is splashing oil onto the bottom of the pistons. This causes a degradation of the piston rings. Would replacement of the rings be a temporary solution to the problem? Will the new rings last as long as the ones that are on there now? If so... What is the part number for a new set of piston rings? If you know... Hook me up! I have already started to have excessive oil consumption. What could the end result be if I do nothing to address the problem? Thanks for taking the time to read this.

 

The only resolution I've read is just disabling DOD.

 

Thanks man. I just started the piston soak. There is a new AFM splash shield for different engines that use DOD. It's only $3. I haven't been able to figure out if it will fit the LS4. For the price, I think that I'm just going to go for it.

I am pretty sure that the internals are identical. The oil pump P/N is the same. I hope it works.

 

Just found this out...
Procedures are being developed to repair this by cleaning the oil control rings and redirecting the AFM pressure relief valve oil away from the cylinder walls. The related parts and procedures should be available during the 2011 calendar year but an exact date is not available at this time. As soon as the repair becomes available, this PI will be updated with additional details, or a separate bulletin will be released. Also note that the AFM shield described in the latest version of 10-06-01-008 will not fit the LS4 engine.

I am looking at other options as well.

 

i havent drove my car enuff to know if i have this problem yet (maybe 900 mi since nov) i will have to check next time i drive it....but i have warranty for about 4 months

 

There's really nothing the dealer can do for you. Maybe eventually, but if they're not willing to admit there's a major flaw in our transmissions, what makes you think they're going to "fix" our minor oil consumption problem?

 

i know how gm is....i had a 3400 in my old monte and they never did anything about the intakes not sealing
