OK that works. But here is a bit of J.C. logic for you: How log has it been since you have replaced that sensor? Someone mentioned in this thread that you've had this problem before. That's why I point towards the CAT. Something has got to be causing the O2 to throw a code. So, if I had replaced my sensor in the recent past and I know I will be replacing my exhaust in the near future, I wouldn't want to replace my sensor and have it go bad again and worse, after I put in the new exhaust. I would see if I can make the existing sensor work, then replace everything in one sweep. It may only be $30 but That's $$$ that you could spend on something else. Now if you clean the sensor and the problem doesn't go away, by all means swap it out. I am an expert on how bad your gas mileage can get when you have a bad O2 sensor. And if the sensor has not been in for too many thousands of miles the carbon build up has not been Baked on. It may be worth it to try.
Now, I did this once with my 88 blazer. And the sensor lasted till I could replace it and the CAT. But that does not maker an expert. It could have been Dumb Luck. Hopefully some of the more experience members will chime in to tell you if my logic makes sense!

I got something else for you. I just found out, YellaJAC was in the shop this w/e, that a bad MAS can cause a O2 sensor 1 Bank 1 code. My symptoms were different from yours though. I did have the Bad gas mileage. But my car suddenly shut off. Not Stalled, shot off like I removed the key. Every time engine temp on the dash reached 160°. She did not make it home from work Friday night.
Anyway, I was thinking it was the ICM. I new it was an electronics problem because it was reacting to heat but not and over heard condition. The mechanic found that not all the signals from the MAS were received by the PCM. He said that could cause the engine to run lean and the O2 lean code. He put a new MAS in and she runs fine now with no O2 sensor code.
I'm not saying you have the same problem. But since you have replaced the sensor once, there could be something other than the sensor causing the code.
They used a Tech II to find this.

i am using an off brand maf sensor i believe had to get it from autozone in a hurry...will be using a delco soon....still getting that code...its just too cold to replace it right now
I hear that. My old one was GM. But it had 180000+ on it. The one that gave me the starting trouble was an off brand. Only cost me $26. Guess I got what I paid for. Next thing for me is the fuel system, think I may be sucking air. My FPR was replaced last Feb. So I think I may have a leak in the line as it goes up past the fire wall. And I need to replace my wires. But it's only 10° here in Jersey. I hardly even wanna get in my car and let it warm up in the Morning it's So dang cold!
Ok so I went ahead and just changed out the sensor seeing as through I already had it. Still curikus on what brand I put in it. But I did make a note of it this time. We will see if this light comes back on... here's what the sensor looked like
Was not hard at all for me. Just make sure u got an extension, swivel joint and o2 socket and your good to go. Took me around 20 mins

I agree with Owen, it's not tough to change. Some people "rock" the engine forward, I never have (but I never dealt with a 3800 that has a California Air Pump).
If it helps, I find most the time the old one is really in there. I normally cannot use the O2 sensor socket. What I've done in that case, cut the wire off the top of the O2 sensor, slip a regular deep well socket (I think it's a 19mm). Use a long enough extension (or series of extensions) so my rather or breaker bar is above the engine and fenders. You will probably need a good breaker bar or slip a pipe over the ratchet handle and crack it free. After that, the rest is a piece of cake!!
