Default Neutral Safety Switch Question

The 4t80e I got from the junkyard has an external electronic neutral safety switch. The 4t65e however, doesn't have a module like that. Where is the neutral safety switch for the 4t65e? is it an internal one, or is it located in the shifter/gear selector? All race class specifications I've read require one, and I'm trying to figure out if I need to wire that electronic switch in somehow or not.

Pretty sure, at least on mine, it's underneath the brake booster/master cylinder area, external on the transmission.

I agree 👍 it's part of the gear selector on the transmission

I have a 4t65e outside a vehicle, and I dont see any electronic conectors even on that area of the transmission. Just to make sure I'm not confusing things, I'm talking about what locks you out of pushing the gear selector into reverse while driving.

It has been removed I can see one bolt hole. It is pictured in the first picture post. You need to remove the nut and shifting selector in order to install it over the shaft.

Your talking about 2 separate things in this post. The neutral safety switch is part of the electronic connector on the transmission . The park lockout on the shifter is controlled by the key switch which is irrelevant when racing at a sanctioned racetrack

The 4t65e currently in my 2000 Monte doesn't have an electronic neutral safety switch on the outside of the transmission either. Also, I'm not sure if this information is up to date or credible, but heres a screenshot of the NHRA regulation I was refering to.

I certainly don't want to give you the wrong advice. I checked my 2002 and it was on the transmission where I described so guessing the update was done in 2001. You might want to message the "Maniac" for a wiring diagram. As As for the shifter lockout , the factory shifter already has a positive lock on it to move it into reverse so your good there. I'm wondering since your transmission doesn't already have it on the transmission you might get lucky and it's part of the shifter where you don't have to do anything. Wish I was more help.

The neutral safety switch is internal on most 4t65s. This stops the car from starting in anything other than park/neutral. The reverse/park lockout is a mechanism built into the shifter. This stops the shifter from moving into reverse without the brake being applied. This one is inside the consol.

The first picture in this thread shows an example of an external neutral safety switch.
