Default 95' wont start in park, but will in neutral

Having a intermittent issue with my 95' not starting in Park position, but will once moved to neutral. I think it may be the neutral safety switch, is there anything else that I should look at first that could be causing this issue? How difficult is this switch to replace and is there a proper procedure to do so? The car has the 3.1 Automatic. Thanks for your help in advance!

Check the linkage on the tranny (at the NSS), make sure it's in place properly - if it is, then check the wiring going to the NSS, if all looks well then the switch itself may need to be replaced.

I had the same problem years ago with my wife's old '94 Grand Am (3100 powered). It wasn't expensive or hard to change. The NSS at least on the '94 Grand Amsat on the trans almost directly under the brake booster. Moved the air ducting from the air box out to get a good reach on it.

I agree. I am A ASE master automitive technician, it sounds like the neutral safety switch is bad. I have seen a few of theese go bad.

Yep have to agree....
Its been my experience as well...If it doesnt start in park..But does in neutral...

Neutral saftey switch is worn out....

Has anyone "EVER" thought about how many times you actually put your car in "PARK" a year?
I know I havent and we all take it for granted....Daily....

Something to ponder!

I had this happen to me once. I didn't actually need to replace anything but adjust the shifter cable under the hood to ensure it had the correct tension on it. It wasn't pushing the cable far enough when I put the car in Park therefore it wasn't actually getting into park and therefore wouldn't start. I adjusted the cable to make sure it was pushing the lever on the tranny far enough and it fixed my problem.

Thanks for the response! After checking for replacement parts, I found this car has a listing for two different switches, one on the steering column and one on the tranny. Has anyone ever replaced the switch on the steering column before? It appears that I could test the continuity on the switch to see if its bad, the weird thing is, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, I would almost go with the" adjustment theory" Any thoughts?

It's pretty easy to rule out the adjustment theory. If adjusting the cable doesn't fix your problem then it's the NSS.
