Default Need some help

I have a 87 SS lined up to buy. Body is in good shape so thats good, but I am thinking of taking out the 305 that comes with it and placing in a 350, from which I hear is a smart thing to do. Now I know this is the engine section but I have a transmission question that is linked to it. If I were to do this, hypothetically would I need to replace the transmission? Now I am kind of new to the whole rebuilding scene and have been reading like crazy, but I do not know much about these older transmissions. Any model help would be awesome, and if anybody knows which cars have interchangable parts. Any help on the subject would be great and would be a good push in the right direction. Thanks

First of all, welcome to the forum MadMax. I can't answer your question, but rest assured we have well qualified members that will be able to help you. Just be patient because sometimes it can take a little while to receive a response. How many miles are on theMonte? How does it shift? Do you know if it is a 350 Turbo Trans or a 700R4? (This is the extent of my VERY limited transmission knowledge) Something you may also want to consider--is it going to be more cost effective in the long run just to replace (with a new or rebuilt) transmission or if you can use the current trans on the 350, will it be cheaper in the long run to use it? When you receive an answer and decide what to do, keep us updated!

if the tranny is still stock.... it's an 200R4 overdrive.swapping the motor wont affect the trans unless its got 375 ft/lb or more of torque typically. if you chose a carburetor for the 350you will needto make sure the throttle valve cable is re-connected otherwise damage will occur quickly to the trans. likewise with any fuel delivery the 200R4 will require the tv cable connected.sometimes getting the bracket and cable properly set up can betrouble.
