Like others have said, the mph that you are driving at is right at one of the shift points for the tranny and is probably why you are feeling the converter locking and unlocking quite a bit. If you drive at those speeds a lot, just leave it out of OD and use 3rd.

I have a 92 Cavalier that is my daily driver and if I drive it constantly at around 40mph, the converter locks and unlocks constantly and causes the car to buck. This car doesn't have an OD tranny either. I just have to speed up or slow down to keep it out of it's shift point and then its fine.

Another thing I learned on mine is that having a good battery is very important. Last May, my tranny starting feeling like it was slipping all of the time and not shifting right. Soon after that my battery indicator in the dash came on. I had the battery tested and it was bad. I installed a new battery and those symptoms went away. These cars use electrical power for pretty much everything so having a good battery plus clean and tight grounds is very important.

I would invest in a good pair of ramps. I use a set of 12,000lb rated plastic ramps that I bought at Walmart. Most Autoparts stores also sell them. I think I paid around $45 for mine. I feel that they are safer and gets the car high enough off the ground to have plenty of room to work. I even use a creeper under mine like this with no problems.

Here are the ramps I'm talking about.

40-45 is a known dead spot on these cars.

A tune would help with that.

I sell those at work, + my discount will help.. I was thinking of getting them but they will probably be useless once I lower the car. Can't use a creeper on my driveway, its not a full cement/blacktop driveway at my parents house, its a dirt driveway with two strips of cement.. hate it with a passion!
Can't pull it into the garage either, too much junk ): My complex won't let me do such a thing either, too messy.

Once you lower the car, you could always jack each side up and put the ramps under the wheels so you could have a sturdy platform for the car to sit on. I've done that on vehicles when I wanted to work under the rear end and not try to back it up the ramps. I don't like getting under cars that are on Jackstands but that is just me. If you lower the car too much, you may have issues getting a jack underneath it anyway.

if you lower the car ramps will not work unless you put wood like 1/4-1/2 way up the ramp and angle it further out to the ground so it isnt as steep. personaly i dont use ramps i just use good jack stands, if there positioned right the jack stand will be fine. also for me i feel no need for ramps because 3/4 of the time i am working on turbo monte the wheels have to come off.

My Monte can't go on ramps now without a struggle. I just use a low-profile jack and jackstands too
