Default My Right Axle cup is Stuck in the transmission!

Last week, it got significantly worse. From 20 MPH to all speeds higher. In third gear, it felt like a washing machine in the spin cycle with a poorly balanced load.
I thought the problem through, did some reading, and came to the conclusion that I have a bad axle.
I went to Pepboys today, bought a new axle came home and took the car apart, as I pulled on the old axle, it came apart at the inner CV joint. So the cup that goes into the trans is still the trans.
I don't know how to get it out now.
I only have a Jack and Jack stand to work with. And I don't have a pry bar to get the cup out. I'm a very "Think Outside the Box" type of guy. But this time, I feel like a Flee trying to beet up The Sun! If you know the engine compartment of the 6Th Gen SS, you know there is not a lot of room to move anything.
I need a 6th Gen Genius. The Ultimate Monte Carlo Guru! I know if such a person Exist, they are here on MCF. Mr. or Ms. Guru, please come out of the rafters and tell me how to get this dang cup out!

I agree with John, you need a large flat tip screw driver or a pry bar of some type. There is a C clip which retains the axle shaft which your needing to force out of it's channel. Sometimes you will need to rotate the axle shaft a little and pry again, repositioning the C clip each time as you re-pry the axle houing away from the tranny case. Put the prybar or chisel, screwdriver the axle housing and the tranny case and tap it pretty hard with the palm of your hand, forceful enough to unseat the C clip. It should then pull right out. Have a drip pan ready to catch a limited amount of escaping tranny fluid. Best of luck JC!

Default hey

There is another option, clawhammer and a jack. Dont you have a factory lug wrench? That would work as a prybar.

Thanks guys, I do have a Harbour Freight close buy. I may be able to fine what I need there. I was just some damn Frustrated when the axle pulled out of the cup. All the little pin bearing came out of one of the roller bearings. That's way I was getting that vibration when I accelerate. All it takes is one bad bearing to cause the whole dang system to be out of balance.
Then I should have known that wish happen. When I replaced the hub on that side the axle came out of the cup. Never having replaced an axle before, I thought that was normal and just put it back in and drove around that way. Well at least now I know I only HAVE to replace the TCC and not the Whole Transmission. But I want the Basic TEP Street/Strip transmission anyway. And a 2K stall speed converter.
I'll go the Harbor Freight in the early Am and get what I need. Then I can tackle the minor trans fluid leak I have where the hoses go into the trans cooler.
I hope that will be it for the winter. The last thing I have to do is bank #1 O2 sensor. But I'll wait till March for that. But then I'll be ready for inspection. In April. After that, it's a clay brick wax job the get out the dull of the paint. But first things first!
I'll keep you all posted. Thanks again to Everyone!

I have not done it on a Monte, but I've removed axle shafts from my old '94 Grand Am before (they work on the same principals, just the Grand Am ones are smaller). You don't pry these out. Per the shop book on the '94, I had to use a "drift". You can use a good flat head screw driver as a drift. Get behind the "cup", put the plat point as close to the center of the cup and a couple whacks with a large hammer and it should come out.

I also believe you need to replace the seal on your transmission, otherwise you will leak trans fluid after this (I found that out the hard way on the '94).

Thanks Jason, my buddy Phil, was very adamant about not damaging the seal. And the Matt at Pepboys didn't say anything about replacing it. So I have to assume that if don't right, which means Very Carefully, the seal does not have to be replaced. I guess I will have to find out which one I do. Careful and Once, or not carefully and Twice!

Be careful with harbor freight tools everything I buy there bends or breaks lol. Its all lifetime replacement but its a hastle.

Maniac is correct you can do his solution with a screw driver and hammer but you can also pry them out with a pry bar just make sure your not prying on the trans or the trans will crack.

As for seals I've changed axles and not changed seals and having had an issue... just don't damage the seal and you should be OK.
