Question My 2002 has a "jasper" engine in it!

Just found out today my LOW MILAGE 2002 Monte Carlo SS has a replacement "Jasper" engine in it! Less than a year ago I bought a 2002 Chevy Monte Carlo SS with 47,000 miles on it. TODAY, i took into a Goodyear service center to locate a small oil drip. The mechanic said, you know this is NOT the original engine in it??? I replied WHAT! There is a "JASPER" tag on underside of engine block. Car runs fine however it is as if somebody punched me in my gut! A car with 47,000 miles with a replaced engine??? CarFax, showed nothing other than three services at one to two years old 2002 a - 2003? If Dealership would replace engine at 1 - 2 years old wouldn't you think it would be a GM. ? Got 57,000 miles on now. No issues but just leaves that question of why engine was replaced?

My 2005 Monte SS Supercharged had 15,000 miles on it when I bought it..
At 16,900 it spun a cam shaft bearing.. GM installed a new engine for $00

Do you have any info on the last owner? You could always give 'em a call and see if they were the ones that had the engine replaced or if it was the previous owner and maybe why?

I called a previous owner on a '92 Eagle Talon TSI Turbo that the tranny went out on at 65K just to see if he had any problems previous to me owning it. He was very cordial and polite and I don't think he minded me contacting him.

Some folks might not be up for that but its an option.

Did you do a thorough inspection of the vehicle before you bought it?

Hi Huckster,
I would go back to your selling dealer & see if you can get more information...

Infor on Jasper `if U did not know what they are ?
  • A JASPER Remanufactured Engine, Transmission, or Differential Exchange Product is your best solution! A question we get a lot is what's the difference between remanufactured engines (or transmissions) and rebuilt or used engines (or transmissions).

Today when I got home I jacked car up and wrote down Jasper serial number. Then I emailed factory in Indiana. Got a reply! They said their engine was sold to previous owner on 10-14-10. New engine warranty expired on 10-14-13. Last owner (original owner) must have wanted to trade in just as warranty ran out.
So at the end of my investigation I have a four year old engine in my twelve year old car with aprox. Eighteen thousand miles on it. If all goes well guess not too bad of deal....
Oh, had a CARFAX report too. No mention of replaced engine. Not sure if it would ever. Can't go solely by those reports.

Congrat's on the good news & updated engine.
I was impressed with the vid on Jasper Engines...
Car Fax & Auto checks are just a guild
of records/services/problems of what's been reported.
Wish you many safe/reliable fun miles > EnJoy

Shock was my first reaction, then I watched the You Tube video on the Jasper engine and transmissions. Look likes a good deal.
Looks like the original owner didn't have too much faith in the new engine because he traded in the car (I have) as soon a the 3 year warranty on engine ran out on 10/14/13.
