Default Low eng oil level

When my engine is cold, I will turn my key to ON. My message center will say low eng oil level. If I leave my key in this position, the light will go out after 2 - 3 minutes. If I start my car, it will also go out after 2 - 3 minutes. When the light goes out, I will turn my key to the OFF position and it will come back for a few seconds. If I immediately restart the car, it doesn't come back.

Dealer #1
- Light not on at this time, oil 1 QT low, test oil level switch and circuits OK, top off oil.

Dealer # 2
- 130005 scan system. Check oil level operation, working properly at this time. No codes stored, hoist inspect connection and sensor OK. Tested several times and unable to verify complaint. Customer should return if message shows more often.

Local auto shop
- Tried to short the oil level switch to get the light to come on but would not. Looks to be a signal from the PCM to the instrument cluster.

They suggested that I take it to the dealer so they can re-program the PCM with their scanner. I made another appointment with the dealer. I did have my instrument cluster replaced. Can anyone help me with this?

The dealer determined that my oil level switch was acting up when my engine was cold. They replaced it with a GM OEM switch. So far, I haven't had any problems with the light coming on.

This has started happening to mine a few weeks ago. It definitely has an oil leak as it creates a decent size puddle and has a drip trail. When I checked the oil on the dipstick it shows over full. Not sure if I overfilled it, because of this indicator I put in 1 quart. Going to let it leak for a couple more days and check again.

It ended up being the oil pressure sensor leaking, it must have been lightly leaking and eventually the thing popped out and became a full on deluge once the sensor came out. One of the prongs was bent out of place which must have been the start. I could see it behind the passenger side tire, just hanging there.

Not to be a smartass, but have you considered it was turning on because the oil was low? You said dealer #1 put in a quart, which in my experience is how much our Monte's lose before the light comes on. Did it turn on again after dealer #1 topped it off but then before the switch was replaced?

The light is supposed to come on at 2 quarts low. 1 quart is the dipstick reading.

Chibi, thanks for correcting me. Whenever my low engine oil light would come on, I would add one quart and the oil would get right back into the middle of the disptick. Was this just more of a fluke that it worked out ok? Should I have been adding two quarts to get it to the top of the dipstick?

I would go by the dipstick, it's the safe zone and you don't want to overfill.

It spun a cam bearing GM installed a new engine cost $0000
