Default ID Tag Unreadable?

So I got to the transmission ID Tag on my '01 Monte and low and behold its had an exhaust leak so the tag is unreadable. I mean its burnt up black so bad that I can only see the stamped codes at the top of it. I tried cleaning it with some Dawn dish liquid soap and a toothbrush and still nothing.

Oh and this car was wrecked at one time and had the trunk replaced so I can't rely on the service parts identification tag either. As the one in the trunk is out of an '02 Monte which is not mine of course.

So am I screwed? Where can I find what transmission went in this thing? Can GM tell me from the VIN? Can they look up from the VIN the service parts identification tag maybe?

Thanks guys.

What number do you need?

You should have a 4t65e transmission in that car.

Yeah but there is a two digit code they need off the ID tag to identify the transmission better. It tells the gear ratio and I think shift points and other things.

I'm safe if I go with a '01 Monte Carlo transmission but I wanted to have some options of going with an Impala '00 through '02 or even a '00 or '02 Monte Carlo. If I can't get that transmission ID tag read then I'm limited to staying with an '01 Monte Carlo transmission. I didn't really want to limit myself to only that model year.

There's no gear ratio changes in the 00-02 so you are fine there. There's also no difference in the Impala as long as it has the same engine.
