Default gearshift won't come out of park

1995 MC. I think there's a solenoid somewhere that lets the shifter move after you press the shift button when the key is on and the brake is on. Since this is not happening ---- is the solenoid in the consol or where? How do I get to it to see if it gets power, moves etc? Thanks

Default Update

I tried to get the top plastic cover around the gearshift off but it appears the gear position must be movable to get it off. I can see a solenoid on the motor side of the shifter and it does not move when key on and brake on but I think that may be the problem. I guess I'll have to break the top plastic cover to get it off. I'm leaving town tomorrow am for a week so I'll try it again then.

i had the same problem with mine. i just disconnected it from the shifter. the down fall is, when the key is on the brake does not have to be pressed to shift in to a different gear. i looked in to a new one and i have to buy the shifter with ever other item that is next to. it is not cheap.

Finally got the plastic piece up enough to pull the spring off of the solenoid so now it is, as you said, fixed such that you don't have to put the brake on to move the shifter. Works for me, just like in the old days.
