the ls has a different looking from end that the ss. imo the ss front end looks much better. just type in 88 monte carlo ss in google images and you'll see the difference. other than that, i believe the ss has a console shifter and the ls doesn't (i could be wrong, i'm just going off the top of my head here). also, the stock ls has a 305 compared to the 305 HO on the ss. there are other differences too, but these are a few.

to answer your question, yes you should be able to put a 454 in an LS because the LS and SS are very close to, if not the same size to each other under the hood. personally i would look around and find an SS.

ls and ss are the same if you can find an ls cheap and a ss front clip you can have a ss clone a 454 will be a tight fit...don't expect to have heat becuase you would more than likly have to remove

the heater box to get it to fit the 454 in there also you will need to buy bigger springs to suport the extra weight of the big block

Now i'm going from memory, but some LS came with floor shifter and V8. It was an option. You could even get the V8 with a column shifter and a V6 with a floor shifter.

Now as far as stuffing a 454, it can be done. You just have to research a bit. Like motor mounts and make sure your trans can handle the extra torque and HP.

If it was me, i would get the 87 LS and turn it into a sleeper.

you can keep the heater if you clearance the heater box and patch it back in with fiberglass, aluminium plate, etc. this exact thing was done on an episode of horsepower tv a few weeks ago when they were putting a 454 in an 85 monte SS. here is the full episode online http://www.powerblocktv.com/site3/in...-14&ep_show=HP

the install isn't in FULL detail but you can get the picture of what they're doing. like budsjlm said, you will need stiffer springs and big block motor mounts as a start.
