I use the cardboard tube from the empty roll of paper towels. Hold it to my ear and move it aound while moving it around searching for the stray sounds. Works pretty good at funneling sounds to you. An old mechanic showed me that, does good for me when trying to isolate sounds....

If you have a prybar or a long screw driver those work better than the cardboard tube trick. But if you don't it's not a big deal.
While your under the hood, check everything. Tensioner, idler, water pump, etc.
A bearing in a waterpump or tensioner/idler will have a deeper growling noise that varies with RPM
