This was happening on the way home earlier today - I so far haven't reproduced the noise but does it sound like a belt whining?

 

mines actually does that too from time to time, like it does it randomly, wonder what could be this noise we have

 

Have you checked your power steering fluid lately?

 

To find out for sure its the power steering...Try turning the steering wheel to see if the noise still exists or if the noise increases/decreases....

If it does then its the power steering...If not...It could be your alternator!.... Id load test the battery...alternators arent meant to wine like that...meaning its chargeing more than it should be trying to keep the battery charged....

This is especially true if you have a system in your vehicle....The amps are drawing way more than they should be especially if the batterys failing!Batterys only have a 4 to 5 yr running life..

2nd guess would possibly be your water pump....Are you haveing any cooling issues?

 

No cooling issues I know of, no special sound system or electrical systems added, I did turn the car at the bottom of my driveway then start it up and all was normal.

 

the only issue i have cooling wise is that from time to time i notice what seems to be dexcool on the transmission in the back of the engine, but it still cools and what not, and how would i check the level of power steering fluid? its all the way down there lol

 

I've been noticing this happening with my car lately as well. It doesn't happen while idle, only when accelerating. Almost sounds like the faint sound of a supercharger or turbo spinning up. Really hoping it's not the water pump...

 

mine does that to on turbo monte, its not a water pump because i have a electric one on it, its either power steering or alternator.

 

Happened again today for me, opened up the hood and I wasn't able to pinpoint the area it was coming from.

 

I use the cardboard tube from the empty roll of paper towels. Hold it to my ear and move it aound while moving it around searching for the stray sounds. Works pretty good at funneling sounds to you. An old mechanic showed me that, does good for me when trying to isolate sounds....
