Engine Build: Engine swap
Hello I am new to this and a newbie to my 2001 Monte Carlo ss I would love to swap a L67 into my car but I don’t know what I need and the cheapest place to find what I need so if someone could please help me out on what I need to get started please let me know thank you!
So you have the 3800 already.. You may be better off doing a top swap. Youll end up with more power than a stock l67 that way. Id stick with your current trans, just dont be doing single wheel burnouts. Cheapest place to get parts is probably a junkyard.
Bumpin96monte (I believe) has made writeups for the engine swap and possibly for the top swap as well, im not sure. Look thru the different categories, what you need should be stickied.

Cost can be anywhere from 500-1500 depending where you source parts. Can even be higher or lower. You should be good on engine mounts, almost positive l36 and l67 use the same. Might need the wire harness.
Bumpin' or someone will have a more definite answer for you tho, im sure.

3 options:
-ZZP SSM90 kit. This is the easiest option as you buy everything from one place in one order, and the install is as easy as it gets - you're basically only swapping the lower intake and above. First downside is that it's pretty limited on pulley size as it uses an odd blower pulley (not a big deal if you don't plan to go too far) to run the blower off the accessory belt. Second downside is the cost as its probably almost as much as your car is worth.
-Top swap. This can be the cheapest option as people have claimed to do this as low as $300. You're basically taking the whole top end from a L67 (heads on up) and most of the front end (balancer, the whole SC belt circuit). The blower will be the most expensive part, but even buying one used on the various 3800 forums only runs a couple hundred bucks. Most of the rest of the stuff is nearly worthless so you may be able to score some freebies off local members or wait for a sale at your local junkyard. Downside is the labor. The job itself is pretty labor intensive, plus you've got to source all the parts. Best luck is to find a complete car at a junkyard so you can make sure you take every nut and bolt you need. Thats of course pretty rare, so you'll likely end up cobbling together parts from different cars. So this one is very area dependent as some areas seem to have a lot less junkyard availability than others.
-L67 swap. Pretty straightforward- buy complete engine from junkyard or local individual. Install. Only oddball thing from a direct L36 swap is having to update the wiring (its just 2 plugs - MAP and BBV, 1 if you delete the BBV solenoid). They sell a cheap wiring swap kit if you don't want to deal with it. IMO this is quicker to do than the top swap, but you've now got an unknown quality engine. 2nd cheapest option.
Obviously any way you go you need a tune. You can buy a simple canned mail order tune from a 3800 vendor to solve that.
Cheapest way to go will be to scour local junkyards, 3800 clubs, and sales forums.
Please don't get suckered into paying big bucks for a L67. They're not remotely rare. Keep in mind that a full running driving gtp is only about $2k-2500 and totalled ones are only worth scrap value, so don't let someone sucker you into paying $1500 for just the engine.

Wiring I covered above.
Engine mounts are the same if you're doing a complete engine swap (it still drops into the same lowers and the upper dogbones still hook right up).
If you're doing a top swap the mount on the engine must be changed as the passenger side bracket is very different to allow for the SC belt system.
