6th Gen ('00-'05): Cracked Raditor??

Default Cracked Raditor??

WOW! Another repair on the Monty?? I came home from church leaking anti-freeze....started @ the bottom and followed it up to the top, there was a 3" crack right behind the outlet to the engine. Is this normal? I've only had a few plastic raditors and none of them cracked and I usually get over 250,000 outta my cars.

I cleaned the crack, sanded it and applied JB weld Kwik. Any ideas how long that will hold?

It's a temp fix could hold for hours, could be for days, hard to say with the pressure of the coolant system and whether

Did you drill the ends of the crack to prevent it from spreading? If you did (and the area was clean) the repair could last a long time. If not, then you may see a 'new' crack appear on either side of the repair. You should let it cure for a minimum of 24 hours before pressurizing the system. That JB Weld is some amazing stuff. Years ago I repaired a broken mounting ear on a bellhousing with JB Weld and it was still holding a couple years later when I sold the vehicle.

I didn't drill the holes, I didn't read about it til after the fact. I did use a nice amount, nice and thick. I have a new raditor coming today or thurs so it just has til last til then. I hate the plastic crap, if it were metal I wouldn't have ordered a new raditor, the JB would be ok w/ me.

It didn't hold but for a few laps around the block. Time for a new raditor.

i fixed a hairline crack by the cap the was weeping coolant on my lumina. used jb weld and heat gun 20 minutes before i had to go to work. held up till the motor grenaded a couple hundred miles later.

OK, I flushed the system real good and have the new raditor in. I filled it w/ the good 'ol green!! I ran the car to full hot, about 185deg, no leaks, cracks, or any problems. I let out the air in the system once. It's cooling and I'll run the cycle again tonight, letting out more air if need be.
I have a good question, I have a 2001 Monty Carlo SS, I have a Haynes book for a Monty Carlo 1995~2005 but the information in the book isn't even close. This whole raditor job wasn't in there, the ONE they showed was way different. Does anybody else have this problem? Is it B/C it's a SS? It wasn't that bad but if I was just removing the raditor I could have screwed it up bad.

Glad to hear you got it 'fixed up'. Manuals in general are pretty vague and best used as a guide only. The only manuals I've seen that are relatively close are the manufacturer's shop manuals, and even they can lack detail and/or contain erroneous information. When it comes to working on cars always be prepared to improvise.
