Default CHECKING ENGINE OIL PROPERLY?

Can anyone tell me the way to get the most accurate reading on your oil dipstick when checking the oil. Is checking ithot or cold better? I have a 3400 and when I change the oil it seems like 4.5 quarts is perfect but after 1500 miles or so the oil is all over the dipstick.
