Default Bad Thermostat

My 02 LS has been running hot lately....between 215-220 while sitting still so i think the thermostat is going bad. I thought about replacing it with a 180 degree stat but have read that this ould be harmful since the engine is programmed to run with the stock 195 stat and changing the temperature on the stat could potentially be harmful to the engine and its components.......is there any truth to that?

I was going to say the 180* tstat doesn't cause any real damage, but it does lower thermalatic efficency so you loose a small fraction of gas milage.
