3.4 for 3.4 swap... any suggestions before I swap it?
sisters Buick Rondezvous told her to F off and has a nasty rod knock at 119k, 3.4 pos...
Got her a used engine For $400 with 115k compression is good ect,
any sugestions on doing, replacing, changing before i plop it in there?
My list so far is Plugs, Wires, T stat, LIM gasket
got anything i should add to the list? just want to get thoughts from others that may prolong the life of this motor
this is going to be a bit of an under taking....I have no choice but to drop the k frame in a single car garage with basic hand tools, floor jack, jackstands and a Engine hoist(payment for doing this ) even tho beign family i told her i would do it for free as they just bought thier house last year, and have a kid on the way ....
But i want to get her back on the road pronto,

I think with that list you should be good, make sure it gets a good flush of the coolant to get any of the old nasty crap out and make sure to go with the metal gaskets for the LIM.
Also, if you go to edit your original post and then go to the advance part you can change your own title (if that makes sense)

Well, you touched on the stuff I was thinking. Get aluminum LIM gaskets on the new engine while it's out.
Might not be a bad idea to consider head gaskets (it's debatable, I'm seeing 3100/3400's get close to 200K before needing head gaskets).

Everything you listed sounds good, obviously all the fluids will be new too so that's a plus!

At that milage is when my "other stuff" went out. power steering pump, alternator, ac compressor, those expensive preformed coolant lines, mass air flow sensor, and throttle body needed cleaned. After I fixed those ran like a champ.

i might pop the pan off and just sample a few of bearing to see what they look like,
that must have been added in one of the more recent updates i never remeber seeing that ! thanks, it's a good thing to know so i won't feel like a dink next time i mess it up lol
told you i suck at spelling lol thanks Mike!

Mr Grizzly, you musta had bad luck with your ride. I suppose when GM makes as many of these as they do, not everyone is a gem.
I'm driving a '94 Grand Am with a 3100, pushing 220K miles, still has many original parts/sensors (like alternator and power steering pump). Last "big" thing I did was change the steering rack a few weeks/months ago on it.
My wife is driving a '05 Impala we bought December of 2010 and it had 150K on it's 3400 and I think EVERY but the air filter was original. Needed a new trans and down stream O2, outside of that, no issues. But for "good" maintenance, I changed the original plugs/wires, air & fuel filters, belt, oil, drained the power steering and brake reservoirs and topped off with clean fluids. Car runs GREAT!
The 3100/3400/3800's well maintained can certainly last a LONG time.
