2003 chevy monte check engine light
i did a search but didnt find anything. the light just came on when i was on the freeway. i wont be able to get it into a shop for like 2 weeks at the most, what can i check myself if anything? i think its got aroung 59000 miles on it
Yea, I found that out to. Apparently in CA it has to be an approved shop inorder to scan for a code.
Anyway, is it running normal still? We just had a code recently in my mom's 3800 Bonneville, yet the car was running just fine. It was a bad knock sensor.
You may think about buying your own code reader. They are about $100-120 for a decent one. Many of the common codes thrown are simple fixed, and much cheaper to do it yourself than take it in if your somewhat mechanically inclined...

ya, it seems to be running fine. i was just thinking about getting my own scanner too. if i were to would i just be coming here to figure what the code means? also, will that scanner work to scan other vehicles too?
A scan tool from Snap-On scans most OBDII cars I believe, but I think they're rather pricey. You could buy an Aeroforce scanner, it does real time scanning, and tells you what codes your car is throwing. Chances are, your code has something to do with the EVAP system. A loose gas cap could throw the code - or your gas cap may be going bad. I've heard from a few 6th gen guys that their gas cap was fine, yet it still threw a SES light.
