1999 Monte Carlo Engine Ticks/Knocks
I am thinking about buying a 1999 Monte Carlo , but the people that currently own it says it has a knock . I went and looked at the car, started it, and it sounded fine to me. It has the 3100 V6 engine in it, which are also common in the 94-96 Grand Prix. I own a 95 Grand Prix and it ticks until it gets warm, then runs fine. Think that it would be the same issue here?

3100's typically tick. I can't remember if it's due to the lifters or something else. If I were you, I would just look for a car with a 3800 in it. There are scores of vehicles with 3800's and they were also available in the 98-99 Monte Carlo Z34's and are very affordable these days.

I had a 97 Lumina with a 3.1 and it had a tick/ knocking noise..It ended up being a cam lobe shot..It has roller lifters and the roller on the lifter was pitted and worn but the lobe on the cam was also very bad..I put in cam and lifters and that solved it..Plus the 3.1 have intake gasket issues so beware of that...It will dump the antifreeze in the engine oil and before you even realized it the engine bearings would be shot..
