The best way to solve this problem is to throw away that Quadrojet (unless you really understand how to fix one - they can be fixed) Buy an Edelbrock Model 1406 with electric choke. They are bullet-proff. They have virtually no moving parts, easy to install and adjust, and need NO maintenance. Oh, they are cheap compared to a Quadrojet. You can also re-jet them without having to take them apart. One amazing carb for the money. Holley's are great too - if you want to adjust it every month. Very tempermental but great for drag racing. You really better understand carbs if using a Holley. Good luck.

X2 on the getting the Edelbrock. The Quadrajet can be fixed, but it is one tough job if you've never done it. The 350 is also much easier to tune witht he Edelbrock than Q-Jet.

Q-Jet's are great carbs, just a pain to tune and fix.
