Opinion Needed: Engine swap or diy supercharger
I recently got my grandmas 2003 monte carlo ss with 100k miles on it, i have nearly finished getting it back to factory proformance. Eventually i would like to supercharge it but am unsure if i should put one on it myself or get an entire donor engine that is already supercharged
It really boils down to 2 things:
-How confident you are that the current SBE is in good shape.
-How readily available parts cars are in your area.
For the first one, plenty of people do a full swap just for the sake of getting lower mileage / better condition. Given yours was in your family, hopefully youve got a good idea of the background. If it's solid, Id be hesitant to roll the dice with a JY engine as it's always a bit of a gamble.
For the latter, top swaps used to be super cheap because these cars were so plentiful. Plenty of people pulled off top swaps for under $500 as you could grab all you need when your local yard ran a sale day for cheap. Nowadays the yards are running dry on stuff this old. So if youve got none available locally and are going to have to pay full price plus shipping for every single bit of the top swap, then you're likely going to spend more than you would for a whole engine.
As far as performance, they're basically a different approach to the same outcome. For a max effort setup, Id rather have the top swap on the higher compression NA bottom end. But for literally any other situation, either works just fine.
