Hey guys, I know this is going to make a lot of you cringe but it has to happen. My parents live down 5 mile gravel road that is very very steep. It goes down into a valley then back up out of it. Their are also 3 natural springs under the road and I had ny first winter experience eith them last night. Going ten miles an hour in the malibu my abs activated on the down hill and my traction control on the up hill. Its hasn't thawed out for 3 days and the snow is supposed to be coming soon. I know my monte is heavier than the malibu so I'm worried about what's going to happen around christmas time. So my question do you guys recomend chains or snow tires? I really would hate doing this but I don't want to risk the monte sliding off the steep cliff that the road runs along.

 

All season tires should be just fine. Chains on a front wheel drive vehicle?
That's just ridiculous.... I haven't seen anyone use chains on a car since the 1960's.

Maybe you should invest in a 4 wheel drive pickup?

 

Its only beacuse of how steep the road is. A 4wd silverado or blazer is in my plans but I want to pay red off completely first. (Should be about june at the latest) I realized I make a rediculius amount of money for someone my age haha.

 

I think the snow/ice will be long gone by June.

Yeah which is why I need something for now haha. I can always park it up the road and ride the fI've miles on the quad but its cold. Haha.

 

Maybe borrow/by a snowmobile? Problem solved.

 

I'm not even sure chains are legal on regular streets and vehicles (I recall reading/hearing something about they rip up the roads pretty bad, causing costly road repairs). Not saying it's true, just something I recall.

I would say, make sure you have either:
- Really good all season tires (and that there is good tread life left)
or
- Invest in snow tires (I've never used snow tires, but I've heard people that have swear by them)

I never had a problem in the winter with the Monte

 

I just realized something, you guys from back east and the south don't always know what I'm talking about when I say mountains. Heres an idea

Hey man! I'd probably go with snow tires. I live in Maine so I now what you're talkin about with the road and mountains. (I live in the mountains) Last winter my brother's monte kept slippin and slideing even with all season tires on her. So snow tires would be the way to go
