The alternator is in the way for straight bars.

The 3400 bar has a kink to it to go around the alternator.

Obviously, GM had a reason to have a 3400 specific STB. But looking at these 3100 and 3400 pics make me wonder, can you safely get away with a straight bar on a 3100/3400??

I'm guessing it's an issue of engine rock. If the engine rocks too much, it will knock into a straight STB.

that blue grand prix looks interesting..it also looks like there is a hair but enough clearance that if it hit...it would just vibrate....the one on top...might be an issue with a hood clearance....

I think it would fit. If not you could maybe you could add a few spacers to get the clearance. Also if it does hit just once in a while maybe you could add a rubber bump stop of some start.

I just find it odd that GM would make a different bar if the other fit.

Usually they try to reuse as many parts as possible to save costs

i think the one in the top pic...because it had custom brackets...it kinda rose it a little to clear the alternator...if you took the brackets off..i bet it would def not clear...

All random Google find

As Chibi said, GM tends to enjoy re-using when possible (saves tooling up for something else).

But they are not always right. Look at the Monte spoilers. From 2000-2005, two different factory spoilers, two different bolt patterns to put on the trunk lids. 2006-2007, two different spoilers, ah, but ONE bolt pattern. I'm sure that changed saved some money
