You could probably get good results by spraying on bed liner, then spray painting that with color matched paint. Then just clear over everything. I think the dull grayish color on my car looks like something the factory added for protection, not bad at all.

I'm anti dull grey, but for some reason the trunk strip is ok. But a lot of dull grey reminds me of these beasts.

When I read the title to this thread I was like uhhh what?!?!?!? and then when I saw it I was totally suprised it looks pretty good.

Looks nice. It seems a lot smoother than spray on liners Ive seen. I hope it holds up well.

That's funny because that's exactly what I was pretty much trying to duplicate, make it look like its an extra piece of plastic. I'm not a big fan of it either, but I would take a strip of that on the top of my bumper to a giant peeling mess of clear coat any day.
