Yeah the snow makes for nice pictures to look at. And people like looking at a nice winter scene. I get it. I like me a good winter scene too. But for those who have never lived in an area that gets cold winters, with all the snow and ice. Winter is a freezing cold, wet, 5-6 month pain in the a$$.

The driving sucks. The roads are full of dirty snow, slush, ice, and road salt. All of which eats away at your car. The roads are constantly slippery. So it's very easy for people to slide into curbs, ditches, other cars. Your car is constantly dirty, but you don't dare wash it. Because it'll be dirty again within a block of driving. And because the moment you wash it, your windows and doors freeze shut!

With all the dampness in the air, you're constantly scraping your windows. When you leave home to go to work/school, you have to scrape your windows. After work/school is done for the day, you have to scrape your windows again.

And clearing snow around your home is another thing. The snow is constantly starting and stopping. Everytime it snows, you have to go outside and clear the snow. (cue the commercial in my post above, with the guy shovelling his driveway and sobbing -- that's me in february). Here in Windsor, we have a bylaw that says home owners must clear the snow and ice from their sidewalks within 12 hours, or the home owner can be fined.

Contrary to what tv would have us believe, snow doesn't stay nice and pretty. After a short period of time, it turns into a dirty slushy mess. You only get about 6 hours of daylight. It's always overcast and cloudy, the sun rarely makes an appearance. And the wind. Three words: WIND CHILL FACTOR. The temperature is never what you see on the thermometer. The thermometer may say it's 25 degrees. But with the wind chill factor, it could be WAAYY colder than that.

I know every area has it's problems. Earthquakes, hurricane season, etc. And I wouldn't want to live in those situations either.

I want to live in a mall. Where the temperature is always the same, and the only precipitation is the fountain. :p

Oh I know. I'm not saying I live in the north pole or someplace like Calgary, Alberta. I think everyone here knows I'm in the Windsor/Detroit area. Winter still sucks here too. Just not as bad.

By the way, I'm not trying to pretend I live in Detroit. I just use it as a point of reference. Most people don't know where Windsor, Ontario is. So for simplicity sake, I just say I'm in the Detroit area. My location in the top right corner of my posts reads Windsor.

 

I am thankfull that the Deuce has never been in snow, and I have been able to store her and drive my S-10 in winter.

 

Geez lou thanks for the reminder of the fun that is to come over the next few months. Winter here isn't quite as long, snow usually is from late december through march. But the wind chills are just insane, i have a huge open field across from my house so the wind comes ripping across it and drifting snow is a problem too.

 

last winter was a bad one here in north GA. lots of ice on the road and it stayed for days. got the Explorer sideways on the highway. didnt even press the gas when i left the driveway and the back end slid around. some lady had ran her VW off the shoulder, and i was headed straight for her. i turned traction control off and floored it and by the grace of god, i whipped right around her and went on my way.

no matter how good the monte does in ice, im gonna skip the slippin and slidin this year

 

yea we had an ice storm here last year and i had my suv sideways while going over a bridge but 4wd and some fancy driving kept me off the walls of the bridge.

 

That's why we generally don't like mentioning the "W" word (winter), or the "S" word (snow) during the other three seasons of the year.
