My Dad bought a 2001 SS and no offense to anyone who owns one, but it was not fast at all. It was also a lemon. Things on it broke and worn out while things on the 86 SS and the 77 still worked perfect. "They don't build em like they use to"

people say its slow but the 87 ss body style only beat the na 6th gen montes by .5 in the quarter and 6th gen is a v6. the na v6 beat all other post 75 montes. Also the superchargerd monte in 6th gen is faster in quarter by .2 and v8 in 7th gen beats it by 1.2. the 2000 ss monte had great styling and was not slow compared to its predecessors. When they supercharged it only the first gen was faster and thats with the big block.

then there's still the durability issue, drive that new fail wheel drive v8 monte nicely and the trans still wont last to 100k, they were built to fail, just the design of the 4t65e trans is bad, if it had a 4t80e to move the 4000lb body it wouldn't have been so stupid. A manual option would have been nice if it was stronger than the 4t65e as well. But perhaps the worst part about the last 3 generations is the fact they were FWD which makes them the opposite of performance minded and just shy of completely worthless to the people that like auto sports

sorry to sound like a monte hater... i'm not i just think the guy that thought up powering the front wheels should be burned alive, revived, dragged a mile, then shot (bitter? yes, i am.)

The article actually sez "The last MonteCarlo", which actually came in V8 and did the quarter mile in 14 flat. By far tha fastest MonteCarlo ever and certainly no disgrace to the automobile world or GM.

I actually like the Allante and Reatta. I had a Reatta poster in my room as a kid. Nott cars that I dream of, mind you, but they were neat enough and not disgraceful IMO.

I read somewhere before that somewhere in the world of GM design headquarters that they have a picture of the Cadillac Cimmeron on the wall with the caption "Lest we forget..." They do really regret that one. But it wasn't the most disgraceful IMO

But GM does deserve credit, or at least partial credit for selling the most disgraceful car of all time. The 1987 Chevrolet Nova:

GM didn't make the car - it was all Toyota Corolla. But the Nova was a highly respected muscle car. They ruined the name. TransAm's, Challenger's, Cuda's and Camaro's would more often be spoken in the same breath with Nova if the same wasn't tarnished so badly in the mid-80's. History books won't likely include the 1987 Nova.

And I think a disgrace is to come when GM builds The SS and it isn't even a sports car. When Ford built the GT, it was awesome. Chrysler has expanded its SRT line to it's own brand and its only car (the new Viper) is awesome. And the finale of the SS is a fast 4 door family car built on the 10 year old Australian design. I find that a little disgraceful

I forgot about the Pontiac Vibe.. About the only thing on that car that is Pontiac is the emblem. It had a 4-cyl with VVTi (Toyota engine), Toyota suspension, Toyota transmission, etc.

Also, the Buick Reatta and Rivera were very advanced for their time. Very few vehicles of the late '80s had one of these:

The Graphic Control Center. It was very unreliable, expensive, and only available for a few years, but you could say "My car has a touchscreen in it" in 1986.

This is a fwd thing. I've heard it a million times. If the 6th gens were rear wheel drive, people would say they are the greatest cars ever built.

Proving my point. For many people, this is a FWD thing.

It's just something that was done in the 80's, 90's, and the first half of the 2000's. Most cars were FWD. Since 2005, there's been a slow return of RWD cars in the Detroit 3.

Every once in a while, there's a member who joins up asking how to convert a 1995 to 2007 Monte to RWD. Every time someone asked, they said how much they love their car. They just wish it was RWD. And wanted to convert it from FWD to RWD.

To some people, a car will never be a true performance car unless it's RWD. If that's what they want to believe, fine. That's their opinion. We're all entitled to our opinions, and likes/dislikes.

I gotta say I love my DD Monte it rides great and everyone who i have spoken to about it says that they are great interesting looking cars. I just cant seem to understand how people think they are ugly, its got such a smooth sleek look to it and though it is front wheel drive, its not like these things are made for the track anyway mine has held up great with very little problems so far that were easily fixed. Though it would be nice to be rear wheel, in my opinion the difference wouldnt be as significant as everyone makes it out to be
