Sueing over MPG
*likes this part the best*!!!
I thought it was cool how this lady was interested in cutting all the lawyers out cause they stood to make 8.5 million themselves in the class action suit. And Honda won't be allow to use an actual lawyer to defend themselves in small claims. Anyway you look at it, Honda has really mishandled this one. Terrible damage control. Here we are chatting about it, its all over the internet and I didn't even know the Honda's were getting bad mileage before this one.
I think the line between imports and domestics is really blurred these days, but I'm still more interested in the exciting cool but affordable cars. I do strongly consider were it was made more then who the actual manufacturer is.

That's not the only thing some car companies play with in advertising.

I drive I-4 almost daily between work and home. I drive with the cruise set at 70 and try to stay in the center lane. I get passed by toyota Prius' and Honda Civics all the time. I don't recall being passed by a Toyota Yaris or Echo. I guess they can't peddle that fast.
For the longest time Honda and Toyota have been put on a pedestal by the American automotive press and the American consumer. They were perceived as perfect and could do no wrong. Toyota feel off the pedestal a few years ago with the Camry braking scandal and the recalls and then this year with the supply shortages. Toyota makes some decent cars but they are not perfect.
Honda has also been put on a pedestal that I don't think they deserve. I hope this scandal plus the recent recalls will remove them from this pedestal. Hondas are also decent cars but I don't want one.
One way that I guage a success of a car maker is how long the cars last. It seems that Honda cars last ten to fifteen years max. Honda has been importing cars into the USA almost as long as Toyota. I will on occasion see Toyota Corollas, Celicas, Hilux pickups, and Coronas that were built in the seventies. I see that at car shows and I see them driving down the road on occasion. I don't ever see Honda cars from the seventies. Last year I saw a late seventies Honda Civic. It was the first one I had seen in over ten years. It seems like they fell off the face of the earth and the newer Honda cars have faired no better.

My point is that it's a government agency that is giving out those figures. If it was Honda themselves making their own estimates, I'd buy it. But the EPA takes a car and runs the test on it themselves. Every model, regardless of make, that is sold in the US (minus the exempt 3/4 ton and larger trucks), is subject to the same standardized test. That was the point I was trying to make with that comment, that the EPA (which I honestly don't care for to be completely honest) is the one who is responsible for those figures. Every advertisement that I ever see/hear that puts out fuel mileage numbers always puts the caveat "EPA estimated" before whatever numbers they put out there.
The EPA is the organization that releases the mpg numbers, but the tests to produce those numbers are conducted by the manufacturer. That places the responsibility directly on the shoulders of the manufacturer.
As was previously pointed out, this woman's case is not an isolated incident. There is a class action suit against Toyota because of what is perceived as inflated mpg estimates for the Prius. She simply chose to take her complaint to small claims court which is why it is receiving the media coverage that it is.
