Cool should i buy it??

so i got a call from a buddie early this week, who just found a 1986 pontiac grand prix 2+2 (aero coupe) sitting in a junkyard! the car has been sitting for 10+ years, and has 50,000 original miles.

the car appears to have a .40 over 350, edelbrock carb & headers, and they did get it to fire up. the exterior was customized at some point and painted bright yellow with some horrible custom stripes & checkerd flags all over it, but the body apears very solid.

as for known issues, the headliner is sagging, the T tops leak ( don't they all?) and the car needs carpet. and the fuel & brake systems definitly need to be gone through.

the guy's bottem line price on the car is $1500, and i'm really concidering purchasing it as something to take to shows and eventually sell and make a profit on. what do you guy's think? i'm going to try to get some pics up too...

It would be really hard for me to pass up on any mid-80s Grand Prix, let alone a 2+2. I'd jump on it if it was me and had the money.

His bottom line should be free, imo, that's hideous.

It can always be repainted. That's the way I look at it.

Do you have it home yet? Seriously that is one you can't pass up. I want to own one of those. When you are ready to sell let me know. Gregg

Yikes. Taxi cab yellow with taxi cab checkers, and a bunch of late 80's-esque graphics. They even painted the chrome? trim around the windshield, window trim, door handles and everything that shouldn't be painted except the glass. Those rims were the coolest things on the road back in the day, but not so much anymore. What condition is the floor in? Are you going to have to replace sections of the floor?

I'm wondering how much bondo that yellow paint is covering up.

I don't know man. I know those cars are rare. But if that car has been sitting in a junk yard for over 10 years, leaking water into the car, you could be in for a hugely expensive restoration, or resto-mod.

What's the interior like? Worst case scenario, the entire interior is trashed. You already mentioned the headliner and leaky t-tops.

I'm guessing the wiring has been hacked at for an aftermarket stereo at some point too. What condition is the wiring in? Insulation dried out and cracking? Is the wire harness going to have to be replaced, or is it okay?

I guess it depends on what your plans are. If you're planning on a complete resto to make it a show car, you better be prepared to spend some serious cash. You really don't know what you have until the paint comes off, the mouldy old carpet comes out, and you can see bare metal.

How in-depth do you want to go with it Ryan? Budget? Timeline planned?

It would be cool to see a rare Aero Coupe brought back from the grave.

Offer $1000 and if not, give him $1500 for it. It has potential so why not? Heck you could part it out for that much.
