Gregg, I can sympathize with your neighbor problems. The woman next to me used to cause trouble for everyone on the street, all the time, usually petty stuff we could ignore. But then she called the cops, complaining that I had too many rats in my house. She meant to complain about my six cats. The police showed up on my doorstep and asked how many rats I had, so I said (honestly) "None. I have six CATS." The cop explained that three is the limit and that the next time they came to the house and asked me how many I have, I should just answer "three." So I did - and added that I took three others to a friend's farm. After a few more years, and a few more annoying incidents with her, I found out she had Alzheimer's and was going to a nursing home.
I think I learned a lesson from this, and I try my best to apply it when necessary: Always assume the best about people, until you know differently.
