My '84 Camaro has ZERO cup holders (factory issue).
In my Monte, I have no prob with the cup holder between the shifter and center console... But I did have a mis-happ with on in front of the shifter (and since, I will not put a drink in that if it does not have a sealed lid or un-opened can).
My '04 Grand Am is kinda the same about cup holders as the Monte.
Seems the Monte and Grand Am only have about 1 good cup holder.
If you want to see a BAD cup holder design, look at the '04 Grand Am. Fold down a compartment on the passenger side, two good sized cup holders, but nothing holds them steady (they shake/bounce with every bump on the road).

Admittedely....
I drink a lot of cocacola... there the short plastic bottles with a cap...so spillage is a non issue....
However...
If I get a coke from Mc D's ..and the flimsy cup along with the plastic lid...
Doesn't happen in the Monte...Generally... unless im on a long drive somewhere does a refreshment/drink come into play while driving..

Every stick shift car I ever owned... drinking any liquid was always a non option... while driving.
But from the pic...I can definitely see an issue with yours..Hence the ipod holder...lol

I have successfully filled the center console with too much junk to use it as a cupholder, and the backseat is just to far away.. lol and as for the front one, too many things have been spilled, too many times:p
The cup holders in the middle of the Monte are ok, but you don't want tall drinks, or they fall over.
The rear fold down is useless, too shallow to use at all, unless you're stopped.
The cup holders in the Camaro aren't a problem in the automagic.
But I can see it would be a pain in the standard.
My problem with the Camaro is the ride is so rough, it spills out of anything, even a can with a small opening. I've taken to using a locked thermos for my coffee on the way to work

97 only had 1 cup holder, though bottles never fit due to the insert, so i always left them on the passenger seat. 04, the middle cup holder works fine, i've read enough horror stories about the front one that i dont use it, only sealed drinks go in there.
you guys want to talk about bad cup holder design. My first car was a 96' Thunderbird, for the first 8 months or so that I owned it I never even realized it had cup holders. But one day I opened up my center console and there they were. it was a piece that was attached to the lid/door, whatever you want to call it, and when it was opened you could flip down the cup holder.
Now the upside it they were out of the way and I never really used them anyway. So it helped keep the inside of the car looking a little cleaner. However since my arm pretty much only rests on the center console with my hand on the shifter, when I had to use the cup holders it was ridiculously uncomfortable. My Monte wasn't bad, however the cup holders only got used maybe 2 or 3 times.

On the 6th gen that cup holder by the radio is a nightmare. One turn and whatever was there will tip and fall over. Especially bottles, if I make a right turn they fall straight under my break pedal, that did cause me some problems in the past, now it's a dedicated holder for loose change.
