New Chevrolet Tahoe police patrol vehicle enters service

Bad guys and ne'er do wells, beware.

By James Wolfcale November 8, 2013 / Photos by GM

After the demise of the Ford Crown Victoria law enforcement vehicle, manufacturers have been scrambling to fill the vacuum with an assortment of sedans and SUVs. There doesn't appear to any clear leader emerging, and it's looking more likely that police departments will utilize a variety of these vehicles depending on the application.

Enter the new Chevrolet Tahoe PPV. It's a 2015 Tahoe with all the equipment necessary for chasing down bad guys. Chevy also claims that it's the largest police vehicle currently on the market (though, we might beg to differ), and since it has similar dimensions to the previous Tahoe PPV, police departments should easily be able to switch over equipment from outgoing vehicles. An extra battery and upgraded electrical system provide the extra power needed for this additional equipment.
The 5.3-liter V8 has also seen a slight uptick in power to 355 hp. Improved efficiency helps to keep life cycle costs down, which is crucial for law enforcement vehicles that are typically driven long and hard. Handling has also been improved through increased body rigidity, performance-oriented suspension, and a wider track.
Just incase you find yourself in the back of the Tahoe PPV, take comfort in the fact that it also has increased rear seat room. Police departments should start buying these things up soon enough, so be sure to keep those distinctive headlights out of your rear-view mirror.

Motown Mile: Camaro 1LE vs. Boss 302

We love the dearly departed Boss 302. A lot. The Camaro 1LE promises to give us some of the same flavor in a different wrapper. How does it compare?

Meet Chevy's Z/28-inspired Cheyenne Concept

A possible Stateside Maloo?

By Ben Lucareli November 4, 2013 / Photos by GM

Over the years, we’ve gotten our fair share of sporty pickups in the ‘States. The Chevrolet 454 SS, the Dodge Ram SRT 10, and the Ford SVT Lightning spring immediately to mind. Currently, Ford is the only company offering a “performance” pickup option with the SVT Raptor, but what if you want something that’s tuned more for the tarmac? Chevy might just be answering the call in the form of their Cheyenne concept.
GMThe new Silverado Cheyenne concept is a performance version of the 2014 Silverado. Chevy is employing a lightweight, big power philosophy for this new sport truck. The concept uses a 6.2-liter V8 that makes 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Chevy is also shaving weight wherever possible, replacing the bumpers, tailgate and inner cargo box with carbon fiber. Furthering their efforts, the company ditched the trailer hitch, spare tire, center console, and some of the sound deadening materials. As a result, the truck weighs a full 200 pounds less than a production example.
In the handling and braking departments, the Cheyenne has a lowered ride height, a rear stabilizer bar, and the same Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes that can be found on the Camaro Z/28. Other Z/28-inspired pieces the same 19-inch aluminum wheels that can be found on the Camaro and similar extractor vent on the hood. Inside, the Cheyenne gets Recaro bucket seats and a flat-bottom steering wheel, similar to the wheel in the Camaro ZL1. Lastly, the truck gets some trick carbon fiber ground effects and a Borla exhaust system, because a sport truck needs to sound like it means business.

Lexus to debut RC coupe at Tokyo motor show

Images of two-door 4-series fighter revealed ahead of official auto show reveal

We like the new driver-focussed Lexus. In a recent four-car shootout, the new IS350 F-Sport spanked the Caddy, the Bimmer, and blew Infiniti's new Q50S into the weeds. So much for Toyota forgetting how to make fun cars.
Lexus plans to officially pull back the screens on a two-door version of the company's nimblest offering at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show. Teaser images and specs came through the pipeline early, and they're pretty much what you'd expect. Essentially a coupe version of the IS, the new RC seats four, and while there's a three-inch shorter wheelbase, it's slightly wider and longer than the IS. Some of the lengthiness is down to what Lexus claims as the lowest and widest application of their corporate spindle-grille yet, which juts out in front, seemingly ready to scoop up and julienne any jaywalking pedestrians. Powertrain numbers aren't out yet, but the displacements are the same as the IS line: expect a 306hp 3.5L V6 and a 300hp 2.5L V6-hybrid.
Say what you'd like about the Predator-sans-facemask looks of the new Lexus line, at least it has the performance chops to back up the looks. Or at least it will when the RC-F shows up with the rumoured 455hp 5.0L V8.

Chevrolet Silverado Cheyenne Concept Drops at SEMA

Posted by: Kenny Chan onNovember 5th, 2013

The Silverado Cheyenne concept dropped at SEMA earlier today and drop it does, weight that is. With a healthy dose of carbon fiber replacing standard materials in the rear tailgate, bumper and box, and swapping in a set of carbon-ceramic brakes from the Camaro, about 200 pounds were shed. Even the Cheyenne emblem is made of carbon fiber.
Some other stuff you’d expect to see on a truck (even light duty ones like this one) are also absent, like a trailer hitch, center console, sound deadening and a spare tire. Pair up all this weight reduction with a potent powerplant, the Cheyenne is equipped with a 6.2L V8 pumping out 420 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, and you’ve got one bad *** truck.
“Light-weighting is a time-honored method of making the most of a vehicle’s performance which Chevrolet has demonstrated time and again with vehicles like the original 2001 Corvette Z06 and the 2014 Camaro Z/28,” says Chevrolet’s Chris Perry in a statement. “And like those vehicles, the Cheyenne complements its lower weight with more horsepower.”
I’m not sure how big of a market there is for a performance-oriented light truck, but obviously both Ford and GM believe there is one and may be duking it out in a couple years. The only thing this beast is missing is a set of HRE carbon fiber wheels.
