TBH I was hoping for a bit more. Essentially it's just wheels, a rear bumper tweak, and different taillights.

Certainly makes the rear look more modern, but I'm not a fan of the biggest change - the taillights just because they dont really go with anything else on the car.

 

I agree; the whole rear reminds me of a Cadillac. I hope he does another video with a modern front fascia.

 

That guy is an idiot from Europe. He had no idea what the body lines in the side were for. I mean I don’t disagree that they’re kinda missing the mark for flow. And to stay true to Monte Carlo styling the taillights he made up were a huge fail. The front end looked like a mustang profile and he put a black side skirt over the already existing yellow one. The only thing he did right was the C-pillar.

Key elements to keep it Monte style
1. Long nose short tail
2. Flared fenders
3. Vertical taillights
4. Muscle Luxury

I should sit down and sketch a 2021 Monte some time and post it on here.

Sadly though GM had the idea of bringing it back in 2015 I believe then scrapped the idea because 2dr luxury sport coupes just don’t sell worth a damn. And Chevy wouldn’t be high up on people’s choice for that car market.

 

I just wish they would've tried it. GM doesn't make the car we want, they just make a car and then tell us to "buy it or feed your family" and no one should have to choose in that situation. I also heard yesterday that they axed the Buick Regal in the U.S, but will continue sales in Germany.

Please post those sketches if ever you get around to them....I would love to check your work out.

Id agree with Justin on this - that type of car has really turned into a fairly low volume niche market. GM's bread and butter is in making high volume cars, so it's a near impossible sell to the bean counters just to appeal to a tiny enthusiast market.

The problem with low volume stuff like that is it drives cost up which in turn makes people whine that "its too expensive".

I disagree. GM is in the business to make money. They've got teams of people who are paid solely to go through market research and what sells to help guide future models. Although certainly not perfect, they clearly get it right the majority of the time given the huge sales numbers on some of their vehicles.

Its easy as a 3rd party bystander to say we think there's lots of market, but its hard to prove it against a team of people that spend 40 hours a week their entire career researching it who have mountains of charts and files that prove otherwise.


The problem is your definition of 'we'. 'We' in terms of the entire US car market doesn't want another monte carlo and didn't really want the last one either (hence why they pulled the plug). Sure 'we' in terms of the 43 monte carlo enthusiasts on this board (exagerrating of course) want it, but GM doesn't want to sell 43 cars (otherwise they'd be $150k each), they want to sell hundreds of thousands and there just aren't hundreds of thousands of ready buyers out there in this market space otherwise all the brands would be jumping into it.
