This Monte Carlo SS Reminds Us That FWD Can Be Lethal Too

Before you even think about mocking the FWD layout of Sam Buscemi’s Monte Carlo SS, take a look at those beadlocks on the front wheels by OMF. As Sam tells us, they do a lot in helping keep the rubber firmly mounted to the wheels. Images: Sam Buscemi

Let’s just get this out of the way now and say that we miss the Monte Carlo. It was the perfect blend of personal luxury wrapped in a classy and sporty body that was built for the masses. When it was launched in 1970, it was essentially an upscale version of the Chevelle – or a Chevy version of Pontiac’s Grand Prix.
There was even a high performance version in the Super Sport, offering big-block power and tons of torque. It would make a name for itself in the classic musclecar hobby, only to return during the mid-80’s as an emasculated version of its former self with a 180 HP 305 cubic inch small-block. Although that particular example would live on as a collectible in its own right, it wouldn’t be until the brief period of 2006-2007 that GM would once again install a V8 into it’s mid/full-size coupe.
Even though this time around it featured a 303 HP LS4 V8, the drawback was that it was FWD, a layout it was stuck with since it was relegated to W-body car duty that dated back to its 1995 reintroduction. As a result, most enthusiasts stayed away in droves, fearing the dreaded torque steer commonly associated with FWD vehicles that make any real power.
Sam Buscemi is not so easily deterred. He took it upon himself to grab a 2007 example (the final year for Monte Carlo production), and turn it from a quick daily driver into a car that no one would expect could eat their lunch. No seriously, the car that you’re looking at on this page is packing a whopping 800 FWHP, and an equally impressive 700 pound-feet of torque.
Of course, there are a few things you should know, First, it’s no longer relying on the original LS4 block, but rather, a de-stroked 401 cubic inch version of a Dart Machinery billet block that was loosely based on an LS7. Secondly, it’s stuffed full of forged goodies from Callies, Oliver Speedway, and Diamond. The block was topped off by a pair of World Products LS7X heads (shod with Jesel rockers), and a Precision Engineering intake manifold with a classy Monte Carlo callout on top. The spent gases are expelled through a Jardine Header Palace exhaust system.
Oh, and it’s got a Comp turbocharger hidden under the hood too. All of the power and torque is put to the pavement through a 3.29 gear set from Chevrolet Performance, while a 14-inch Wilwood six-piston braking system brings this W-body to a halt in a hurry.
With everything that has gone into this car, Sam credits Matt Snell at Paul’s Automotive and 4×4 in Sandy, Utah for all of the hard work, and immense patience for creating such an incredible monster from an unpredictable source.

An 800 Horsepower, Front-Wheel Drive Chevrolet Monte Carlo SS Exists

The 2006-07 Monte Carlo SS isn’t usually the platform most people start with when looking to make an 800 horsepower monster to attack the dragstrip. While it did feature a 303 horsepower version of GM’s 5.3-liter V8 engine, its front-wheel drive layout made it less than ideal for most people looking to go fast. But Sam Buscemi had a vision, a vision to take the 2007 Monte Carlo SS he purchased new and create an insanely quick, front-wheel drive bowtie-badged coupe.
“Sure, it would have been much easier and much less expensive to do this to a new Camaro, but I’ve always liked these Monte Carlos and it seemed like a worthy challenge,” Buscemi said. “Yes, maybe it was a crazy idea, but I think the results speak for themselves – it works, and it’s fast. Really fast.”
We believe Buscemi when he says the car is fast. He knew extracting 800 horsepower from the stock 5.3 liter engine would be nearly impossible, so he bought an all-new billet aluminium cylinder block based on the LS7. The engine uses a Callies Magnum crankshaft with a 3.750 stroke, 0.25 inches less than the stroke of an LS7, giving it a 6.6 liter displacement. For that extra bit of gusto, a single turbocharger was installed, creating a whopping 20 lbs of boost. The result is 813 horsepower and 768 lb-ft of torque. Again, to the front wheels.
Of course, with a car that powerful, everything else had to be upgraded too, which Buscemi says was the hardest part. Everything associated with the cooling, engine and drivetrain had to be replaced with aftermarket or custom fabricated parts. The axles were beefed up, as well as the suspension components after the stock lower arms bent on a dyno pull and the front wheels were pulled 1.5 inches forward.
Cooling was another difficult aspect of the build. The car is running a racing-style water pump and a Ron Davis radiator. Holes have been cut in the hood to make way for a hood extractor vent off of a GT500 Mustang, which helped to dispel of some of the heat produced by the turbo. The front fascia was switched with one off of an Impala, because surprisingly, it had larger openings for providing air to the cars heat exchanges.
GM High Tech Performance went for a ride in Buscemi’s insane creation and as it turns out, 800 front-wheel horsepower is just as hard to control as you think it is. They likened the ride to walking a mountain lion through a forest, it’s docile when you are just cruising along, but building the RPM’s is equivalent to trying to control the lion when a deer walks in front of it – it’s almost impossible.
“To be honest, after putting about 300 miles on the car, I’m still learning how to drive it,” Buscemi says. “It takes all your concentration, because if you’re not paying full attention, the torque steer and wheel spin will send you across the road immediately.”
So while its not the last word in performance or refinement, its a hoot to drive, and who can argue with that? Check out the full rundown of Buscemis insane front-wheel drive creation over on GM High Tech Performance.

Thanks for reposting cuz I think I might has missed the original!

This might just be the best build of any thing anywhere ever. That differential housing just looks incredible! I can only imagine the hours of welding we're looking at, and they look pretty good. They say a perfect weld looks like a stack of dimes knocked over. And the photography is also phenomenal. I could look at pictures like these of this build all day. It's better then viewing the real thing cuz it shows us where to look!

More! More!
