up north, calling some one "sir" or "ma'am" is almost interpreted as caling them an "old fart".
in teh south it's just common courteosy to refer to anyone you don't know or someone more than about 5 years older than you as "sir" or "ma'am"

It all depends on who was the programer/teacher/mentor
of the student. Some learn, and some do not.
