Default Hunting Safety

To any of the fellow members that hunt on this site (even though it is close to the end of a lot of seasons), I just want to remind everyone to be safe and take all the precautions needed to do so. I lost a very close friend that I have grown up with my whole life to a hunting accident today. He loved to hunt and died doing something he loved, but it is still a big loss. He would have been 20 tomorrow.. So just a friendly reminder to be safe when hunting or around firearms in general, and never take your friends or family for granted because they could be gone in the blink of an eye.

I'm always super careful when I go hunting. I had a very nasty wake up call years ago when I was hunting. I was with a few buddies and we were just starting out so we shot a few trees and whatnot to quick check our sights, I was using my 410 shotgun. I wasn't paying attention and after I took a shot, the gun jammed up, didn't realize it though since I wasn't completely paying attention. For whatever reason I checked it before I fired again and good thing I did. Now I always pay COMPLETE attention when I'm out there.

First thing we always preach with the new privates when we get them used to the rifles is muzzle awareness. And I practice what I preach.

Sorry for the loss of your friend. Gun safety is very important but people should also remember to climb safely too. Use climbing stands, ladders or spikes. Also use a safety harness. People are killed every year after falling from trees.
