How safe is your neighborhood dollar store?
One location of the dollar store chain "Dollarama" went up in flames this past Monday here in Windsor. This location (6711 Tecumseh Rd East), was a rather large store. Taking up a large portion of a strip mall (about 3-4 units worth). The strip mall also contained a dentist office next door, and a number of other businesses.
The Dollarama store was open at the time. About 8:30 pm a woman entered the store with a small child, and proceeded to an aisle at the back of the store. Turning down the aisle, she noticed smoke coming from one shelf about 4 feet up from the floor. She immediately yelled fire and ran to a nearby employee. The employee then noticed the smoke and a small fire on the shelf and pulled the fire alarm. The building did not have a sprinkler system. But did meet all building codes.
Considering the flammability of the contents typically found in a dollar store, the fire spread way too quickly for anyone to fight with a fire extinguisher. Everyone got out un-hurt.
But check out this video of the fire. Watch the very end also. No accelerants (gasoline, etc) were used. This damage is just from the combustibility of the contents of your typical dollar store.

Would this change your willingness to shop or purchase anything from a dollar store? Let's hear your opinion!
A few minutes after a customer noticed smoke...
The fire spreads to a dentist office and a beauty supply store...

I've never been 2 a dollar store, but I think it's more dangerous driving to the store...But, there is danger everywhere 2day...(2 many stressed `out people out there)
I mostly go to Walmart & still get lost in big stores like that..
I don't get out much ~> LOL (I don't have many possessions)...The less U have the less U have to worry about...
Lou, will you shop at Dollarama `if they rebuild ?
Hope they don't arrest you...Now, that's a vacation spot you don't want 2 go 2 4 rest

There are a lot of things in any store to fuel a fire for sure. All the clothing and paper products would go up quick. Plus all the spray cleaners under pressure. Dentist offices have Nitrous Oxide and other flammable items. It's lucky that no one was injured, especially the fire fighters with all the cans that were probably like little missles as the blew up.

That was awesome! Makes me wanna shop there more really. Sounded like everyone watching was having a good time!
They should use that video footage for a TV commercial! Deals are so hot, they're on fire!
I love Dollarama!

In times like that it's good to have those with a sense of humor. It's incredible nobody was hurt. I can't imagine what may have happened if the fire started around noon when more people would have been out there.
