Some things I've had to repair.

Newspaper shoved in holes to bondo over top of. Oh YEAH! Wet newspaper spells perminent rust repair.

How about the speaker wire grafted in to the car's original wiring harness for a trick, long-term repair?

I admit I have done things like tape a stack of washers together to shim a piece of molding on a car so it sets out away from the body as needed before.

But I never drilled holes in side moldings and stuck sheet metal screws through it like some have.

True Story.
At the 1981 Classic Chevy Convention in Dearborn, MI a guy with a freshly painted '57 Chevy was there. The car looked nice, it was straight, it just needed finished by having all the side trim re-attached to the body.

One afternoon we're out looking at the 500 to 600 Tri-5s that attended the convention and we see the owner of this '57 attaching all the side trim by drilling holes through the trim and the car body to attach every single piece of trim on the car. He was angry Classic Chevy wanted $100 for all NEW clips to attach the trim to his car. So he went to a local hardware and bought a bag of sheet metal screws to attach the trim to car.

Now days these same clips will run $300 or more to attach all the side trim to a '57 Chevy. Anyone in their right mond would love to pay $100 for all new clips to do the same work. Not back in 1981 this guy wasn't.

 

I'd never screw on a piece of molding onto a body.

How about this. Using a hanger to secure a muffler. OR. Using a coke can to patch a piece of exhaust pipe and securing it with a hanger wire.

RJ, my dad worked for a guy, who when my dad wasint modifying & fixing there fleet of peterbuilt 379s, the guy had my dad work on his streetrods. one day, the boss man comes in, hands my dad a box of sheetmetal screws, and tells him to attach the molding to his 50 ford, because he needed it for a show NOW!!! my dad went into the supply room, found some genaric trim clips that fit, and used it to attach the trim, which was QUICKER than skrewing them on, lol.

you said the clips were worth $100, just imagine how much the trim he destroyed was worth! our 57 had the same treetment, we lucked out by having a parts car with most of the missing trim, but the two front fender spears came to be $125 after some feirce swap-meet negotiating, and they had to be polished & needed dents removed!

 

something happened to the headlights on my buddy's '78 Lemans. we used the 'ol 1 million candle power deer spotting light to find our way home, which was kind of rough cause we had to turn it off for oncoming traffic.

 

I'm going to have to remember that one.

 

My dad, my older brother, and i were on our way to pick up the 69 charger from paint and when we get on the highway to go get it my dads exhaust on his 95 tahoe rust off after the muflerand falls and starts to scrape so my brother uses his belt to hold the tailpipe off the ground, for a 200 mile trip

 

I've lost count of how many times I've seen exhaust systems being held up with stuff like coat hangars, duct tape, belts, etc...

My dad told me that one of his older brothers once painted a 1940 Ford with a roller and green house paint.
