Gear Heads, Novices, and Noobs Like Me. Need Engine Advice
Well the Mechanic finally got me some engine options. Let me know what you think. All prices include shipping.
New LS1 Longblock $3245.00 + 350.00 Core. 12 Month Warranty.
+ New Block
- Expensive, shorter warranty, no money for cam.
Remanufactured LS1 Long block $2645.00 + 350.00 core. 5 Year 100k mile warranty. Checking to see if I can get a cam in it and if it would still have the warranty.
+ affordable, great warranty, can afford cam
- all LS1's need upgraded oil pump(LS6), and upgraded rod bolts, heads are not as good as the ls6. LS1 pvc system needs to be upgraded to LS6 PVC System, Needs LS6 Valve train with new cam.
Motor I found.
New LS6 Longblock $3485.00 no core charge, keep my old block. 12 month Parts only warranty.
+ Much stronger block with way better heads, PVC, Oil Pump, Timing Chain etc.., Get to sell or keep my Longblock.
- Probably can't afford cam, only a 12 month parts warranty, most expensive
I plan on making this car a driver, I want to take it on long cruises to see JJ 800 miles away. All motors will get a computer tuning, Long Tube Headers, Off Road Y pipe, Upgraded Intake Manifold 85 mm opening and high flowing, 85mm Maf, 85 mm throttle body, and a cold air intake.
Estimated HP to the crank of each set up when done. I may be a little low on the estimates.
Stock LS1 335
New LS1 - 385
Rebuilt LS1 - 410
New LS6 - 445
Let me know what you think. I have posted this also on LS1tech, but they all think everyone should go 427 stroker motor and forced induction.

I would go with the LS6. Since that's the one you found yourself, anything less wouldn't really make you happy.
As for the cam, you might just have to bite the bullet and install it later on. You never know, you might even want to do some more upgrades in the future and that cam might be able to be installed then.
JMHO.
I might be interested in your bad motor if you want to get rid of it.....just sayin..

Hey JJ if you were serious we could work out a great deal. It would be sweet in the Blazer. We could ship it to JJ for a rebuild.
I am leaning toward the LS6 unless I can get the rebuild shop to put the upgraded cam in it and warranty it for 5 years and 100k.

ls6 that's the 6.0 right? it's bigger,stronger and you wouldn't have go changing a bunch of stuff from the ls6 tothe ls1
more power than the ls1 w/o the cam in it anyway's....
JJ just remember it's a LT ! better switch over to the LS style coils

how much would the heads, oil pump, and pvc system cost on that remanufactured engine? would there be enough left over to get a cam? I've had pretty good experiences with remanufactured parts myself. except Auto Zone alternators.. those things aren't worth ****.

Duane oil pump and pvc would be about 200.00, a set of used heads could be 400.00 but no warranty then, and a new set would be probably 800-900. If the remanufactured engine comes with the upgraded camaro heads though it would be a lot better. I need to find out what the casting number would be on the heads.
Justin the LS6 is still a 5.7 liter. THe LS2 went to a 6.0. Here is a little info on the LS6. The one I would be getting is a 2004 Design.
The LS6 is a higher-output version of GM's LS1 engine and retains the same capacity. The initial 2001 LS6 produced 385 bhp (287 kW) and 385 lb·ft (522 N·m), but the engine was modified for 2002 through 2004 to produce 405 bhp (302 kW) and 400 lb·ft (542 N·m) of torque. The LS6 was originally only used in the high-performance C5 Corvette Z06 model, with the Cadillac CTS V-Series getting the 400 bhp (300 kW) engine later. The V-Series used the LS6 for two years before being replaced by the LS2 in 2006. For 2006, the Z06 replaced the LS6 with the new LS7.
The LS6 shares its basic block architecture with the GM LS1 engine, but other changes were made to the design such as windows cast into the block between cylinders, improved main web strength and bay to bay breathing, an intake manifold and MAF-sensor with higher flow, a camshaft with higher lift and more duration, a higher compression ratio of 10.5:1, sodium filled valves, and a revised oiling system better suited to high lateral acceleration.

Well, just how damn badly do you want to beat Ford's :-D Do you want to just kick them around a little bit, send them home to their mommies crying, or kick their @$$ so bad that every time they have to fart they have to clear their throat first? I'd think most of those engines would do well for a street car and cruiser... 400 hp is plenty for the road!
