Hi Everyone, wish you a safe/happy/lucky `day.
History of Friday the 13th
There are different theories as to why Friday the 13th should be feared. Some say it is because 12 is a perfect number. There are 12 in a dozen, there were 12 disciples of Christ (Judas who betrayed Jesus was the 13th guest that night), 12 months in the year, 12 Greek Gods, 12 tribes of Israel, 12 signs in the Zodiac and 12 days of Christmas.
So, for this simple reason 13 makes people uncomfortable.
The superstition has led to many buildings not having a 13th floor, many people avoid travel or doing special things on the 13th and as a result the 13th sometimes can be a safer day to travel. Employers report that there are often more absentees on a Friday the 13th. I wonder if they compare this with a regular Friday?!
Friday is Frigga’s Day. She was the ancient Scandinavian fertility and love goddess, equivalent to Venus of the Greek Gods. Frigga was worshiped on the 6th day of the week, like Venus which was of course Friday. Christians called Frigga a witch and Friday the witches’ Sabbath.
According to Donald Dorsey, a folklore historian, the fear of the number can be traced all the way back to ancient times, when the Vikings inhabited Scandinavia. 12 gods were having a dinner party at Valhalla, the Viking’s mythological heaven. Suddenly, an uninvited guest, the mischievous god Loki walked in and instigated Hoder, the blind god of darkness to shoot Balder, the god of joy and gladness.
I was surprised to discover that there is actually a technical name for fear of Friday the 13th! It is Triskaidekaphobia! Try saying that 13 times quickly!!
