Chevrolet will soon bring the Spark subcompact to the U.S. market. The long-expected announcement was confirmed today on the Twitter feed of Chevrolet spokesman Jason Laid.
The announcement wasn’t entirely surprising, as we expected the Spark to arrive on our shores in mid-2012 as a 2013 model. The car is already on sale throughout Asia, Europe, and South Africa. It’s based on the Korean-market Daewoo Matiz and when it arrives here, the Spark will continue to be built in South Korea.
The Euro-market Spark is offered with a choice of 1.0- or 1.2-liter gasoline inline-four engines, which produce 67 hp and 80 hp respectively. They are mated to a five-speed manual transmission and return the equivalent of about 46 mpg. It’s rumored that the U.S. market will score a 1.2- or 1.4-liter engine that returns about 40 mpg.
At just 143.3 inches long and 62.9 inches wide, the Spark hatchback is a foot longer than the petite Scion iQ and about three inches shorter than a Mini Cooper. With five doors and five seats, Chevrolet says the Spark’s interior is space-efficient and doesn’t feel cramped.
Look for a more official announcement and more details on the American-spec Chevrolet Spark later this year.

Great for the Asian market. Sucks donkey ding-dongs for the North American market.
All these messed up concept cars GM comes up with has me wondering. When is GM just going to make it official, and change their name to Toyota?
Oooo!!! We're going to "score" a 1.2 or maybe even a 1.4 litre engine!!!!! Just my opinion, but that's crap. I've owned a 90 horsepower 1985 Cavalier Type 10. So I know how gutless 90 horsepower really is. You can't even squeal the tires. If I'm going to sacrifice horsepower for fuel economy, they better come up with better fuel economy than "about 40 mpg".
I'm sorry, but leave the spark for the Euro-market. Around here, that qualifies as a decently powered golf cart. I would hate to be in one of those on a highway doing 55-65 MPH with big rigs whizzing past me. If it even does 65 MPH.
The Chevy Spark gets 5 thumbs down from me. :t humbsdown:
