They are purely cosmetic. And I know Monte owners install them to mimic nascar Monte's. But what was Pontiac's reasoning for making them?
NASCAR had roof rails for quite awhile back before 2000.

And on the Grand Prix model in question.

With the roof rails you'll notice better handling at 180 mph, especially in the corners...

Wow. That's weird seeing the #18 Interstate Batteries car as a Grand Prix. And washing the windshield instead of a tear-off sheet.
