Alfa Romeo
: a part of Fiat since 1986, left the US in 1995. Fiat attempted a return in 2003, and again in 2006 before the big economic meltdown thwarted further plans. But this time, Fiat CEO Sergio Machionne says they’re serious.
“I’m a lot more confident now that Alfa Romeo will reconstitute a product offering that is acceptable globally, and more particularly in the United States and Canada,” says Marchionne. “There is a strong likelihood that the brand will be back here within the next 24 months.” Marchionne and Fiat Group
Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo have been credited on numerous occasions as returning Fiat’s automobile division to profitability in 2006
When the company left us back in 1995, it was due largely to failing sales from a reputation of being unreliable. According to the Wall Street Journal, they have since worked hard to polish up their image and rectify their reliability issues. However, they face bigger problems with their lack of new models. The Journal implies that their success will depend on revamping their vehicle lineup, dropping the fancy-pants status a few notches and becoming affordable to the masses.
Marchionne is not interested in throwing more cash at Alfa Romeo and plans to borrow from the Chrysler platforms such as using the Chrysler 300C to replace the Alfa Romeo 166. He also indicates that he wants to use the Chrysler and Fiat parts to build a compact front-wheel drive replacement for the Alfa 159. One can only speculate what will come of the MiTo or sought-after 8C; there has been talk of the Giuletta arriving and Alfa Romeo is hopeful that it would be the model to solidify its rooting into the US market.
